Prompt:
It is not possible to eliminate poverty. Agree or disagree? Why?
One of the most challenging issues in our 21 century is global poverty. As reported by the United Nation 2009, although the household per capita in various countries have a great leap-in, there are still billions of people in the world suffered from poverty, particularly the citizens in the Africa continent. The average monthly income for the people there is still less than USD$2. This figure may seem exaggerated, but it is a candid sad truth.
Personally, I do assent with the statement that poverty is impossible to be fully eradicated. Just like there is always shadow ensuing the presence of light, there is always poverty a concomitant of wealth. Assuming that there is only a fixed amount of money available throughout the world (exclude the possibility for each country to print extra money to simulate economy), the money is simply flitting from one’s hands to the others'. Conceptualizing this logic, a raise in number of millionaires around the world simply indicates that a raise in number of poor people as well, as the mobile cash flow flows towards the affluent from the hands of the poor. Thus, with the constant uprising of well-off, it is unlikely for the people to escape out of the vicious cycle of poverty.
Apart from that, it is testified that combating with poverty issue is indeed a great ordeal. This is vividly depicted via the negative outcome of numerous schemes implemented by various organizations in the world, in the aim to eradicate poverty. The ultimate predicament is due to insufficient funding. As one is aware of, poverty does not simply refer to deprivation of basic needs, but deprivation of knowledge as well. Hence, besides a need to upgrade the basic needs in life, such as electricity and sanitary system, there is also a need to educate the people, to empower them with new knowledge and skills. In order to implement all these reforms, tons of dollars are required in a long run. And the money injected by various organizations can only last for a short period of time, as this poverty issue is incessantly emerging.
Besides that, some of the schemes introduced in helping the poor are just not suitable to be up-scaled, in order to extend its help to more people. For instance, the microfinance introduced by Kashf foundation catered to the Middle-East countries might be useful to some poor people, but it still has its own limitation. It cannot be catered to all the unfortunate, as there are some poor who do not have the ability in handling or setting up a business. As an aftermath of failed business, they suffered poverty worse than before setting up business, as they are now caught in more debts.
In short, poverty can never be fully eradicated. Even with the best efforts of us, it is still impossible to eliminate poverty. Nonetheless, this does not indicate that we should stop incriminating ourselves in the efforts of saving the poor. Although poverty will still exist eventually, its territory should greatly dwindle with our best efforts. As a responsible citizen on earth, we should always work the best of us in helping the others in need, regardless of the possible negative upshot.
