SAT Prompt:
“Everything comes if a man will only wait.” – Benjamin Disraeli, Tancred
“Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” – William Jennings Bryan, Memoirs

Assignment:
Should we wait for good things to come, or is destiny not something we can wait for?

Indisputably, people tend to possess two distinct attitudes towards destiny, namely pro-fatalism and anti-fatalism. The pro-fatalism devotee believes that everything will fall into the right place; what one needs to do is simply waiting for the good things to come. However, the anti-fatalist upholds the concept that one’s attitude is one’s destiny. Instead of waiting for the good things to come, destiny is something that we have to fight for.

Being a pious devotee embracing the tenet “one’s attitude rules one’s life”, I personally inherited this belief from my mum. Brought up from a poor family, she is deprived of opportunities, be it the living pittances or the education chances. To obtain what she desired, for instances, pocket money she had to rear pigs and sell flowers in the temples. To obtain an education during the prevalent gender discrimination epoch, she really had to fight against her status quo as a girl. Both she and I believe that if it wasn’t because of her actions making a way out for herself, she might still stuck in the old poor alley.

Another familiar story that resonates with me is the story of Oprah Winfrey. Being a girl raped during the teenage period, she didn’t succumb to her fate. Instead of waiting her Prince Charms to rescue her out from the destitute background, she fought against her destiny. She strived to be educated and toiled towards her dream as a broadcaster. It is evident that she has dubbed herself as a top talk show host; she has founded an organization in helping those girls traumatized from raping experience. She has become successful and all of these achievements are attributed to her belief, fight for your own destiny.

The mentioned incidents are both vivid paradigms of one fighting against their destiny to attain what they want in life. Instead of passively waiting for the chances to come, it is best for one to scout for the opportunities. It does not matter if we are unable to fulfill what we want eventually, even after we have worked towards it, because at least we made it out, and we shall have no regrets about it.

Time spent: 30minutes.

Topic that is pertinent to my mind, but it is still perturbing for me to write out what I ruminated.
