Prompt:
Never do today what you can do tomorrow. Something may occur to make you regret your premature action.” - Aaron Burr –
Assignment:
Do you agree with Aaron Burr that it’s wisest to put things off if you can?
As a pious devotee embracing the principle “Live the best of today”, I strongly disagree with the mentioned wisdom in procrastination. To me, tomorrow is fraught with uncertainty that is beyond my control. Thus, instead of harboring that tomorrow would be a better day in taking action, I rather uphold the simplicity in “action” right at the moment. However, the action taken is definitely not an impulsive act, as it is fruition after my ponderous thought. I believe every second granted in life is a chance, and the elapsed chance is never going to come back again. Which is why, I think it is wiser to take action immediately if we can.
Once a “last-minute” student who loved to burn the midnight oil before major examination, I had realized that putting things off is highly undesirable, as it often leads to an accumulation of workload. In face of stress due to the piled-up work, one tends to become panicky and this greatly dwindle the efficiency in completing the assigned task. It is thus notable that procrastination may affect one’s performance or the quality of work produced. For instance, while conducting a research project, instead of having the thought “we shall think a more brilliant idea tomorrow” and delaying the incipient, one might run a risk in unable to complete the task. In addition, if one does not procrastinate and proceed to work immediately, one will have more ample time in refining the report, which overall lifts up the quality of the work.
This no-delaying attribute is also supported by the slogan in cherishing family kinship. “Now, hug your mum, and tell her that you love her.” This prevalent educational slogan is to encourage the shy children in articulating their love to their parents at the moment when they can do so. Instead of thinking in doing that tomorrow, it is wiser for us to speak our minds out, to express our gratitude to them. Because we never know what is going to happen tomorrow. If they have any mishap, we would be really in deep regret, in asking ourselves for our procrastination, for our silly thoughts that we have never able to tell them how valuable they are to us.
Just Aaron Burr reckoned that something may occur tomorrow that make us regret about our decision, any incident that occur in the future can make your delayed actions undesirable. We simply do not know what is going to happen tomorrow. That is why it is essential for us to act what we want to do immediately, instead of keep putting things off. Nonetheless, before delving into action, we should always ruminate and think through our decision scrupulously. It is to make sure that the decision is not an impulsive action which we may regret in the future. As the adage presages, “The future is always out of our hands, but what you can do is to give your best today.”
